UBUNTU Bloghop

To celebrate her third blogoversary, Michelle Wallace at Writer-in-Transit, is hosting the UBUNTU Bloghop. "In Africa, there is a concept known as UBUNTU – the profound sense that we are human only through the humanity of others; that if we are to accomplish anything in this world, it will in equal measure be due to the work and achievement of others." – Nelson Mandela.

Be sure to visit Michelle, and all of the other talented writers who have joined in the celebration. In the meantime, here is my attempt:

Rings That Bind

Working toward a dream,
Battling nail and tooth.
They finally come together,
To seek their greatest truth.

The spirit of Ubuntu,
Pride in blood and sweat.
Where language isn't a barrier,
And victory is anyone's bet.

Whether synchronized or solo,
Speed or stylized tricks.
The risks are monumental,
Points tumble off like bricks.

A skier's gotta soar,
A skater's gotta twizzle.
A winterland's the stage,
The ratings set to sizzle.

United in the stands,
As the torch blazes bold.
The finest are brightly cast,
In bronze, silver and gold.

  1. Hi human, Julie,

Although my human shudders at the very thought of a blog hop, he realises and I realise, that this one is a worthy one. Michelle is a cause for celebration. She's one of my adoring fans! Arf! Arf!

Your contribution is most thoughtful. The way you combined the ideals of sports and the hope of a caring humanity, is deep as the driven snow.

    Pawsitive wishes,

Penny the Jack Russell dog and modest internet superstar!

  3. Gary - You are absolutely right about Michelle! Thanks for saying that I'm as "deep as the driven snow!" I hope this is before Penny and her friends put their finishing touches on it!

    Thank you Shelly!

LG - Thanks for the kind words! I really appreciate it, LG!

  4. I love your timely poem Julie!
It has PIZZAZ... filled with energy and excitement... which makes me think of a contagion with tentacles reaching out... spreading its fever across the globe... bringing nations together...
Without a doubt, sport is a great unifier!
Thank you for reaching out across cyberspace, to participate in the blog hop!

  5. I love this! Such a thoughtful poem and creative way to tie the Olympics into the idea!

The concept of ubuntu reminds me of that of sonder (Sonder), which seems like one of those things that helps us sense our "human-ness" by making us realize that the humanity of every person around us is equally as detailed and complex as our own. Fascinating/thought-provoking subject.

Love that you wrote a unique poem about these ideas and thanks for making me think about them!

  8. Very well written--and very topical with the Olympics going on. Those athletes can be very inspiring.

Stephanie - At first I wasn't certain about the true meaning of UBUNTU, and then it hit me while we were watching the Olympics. This year is particularly relevant given the location. Thanks Stephanie!

  16. How perfect that your poem focused on the Olympics, and what a wonderful poem it is. I especially love the in-depth look at the athletes that we get before some of their races (but I DON''T like the obnoxious probing questions asked of some of the athletes after their races--aka Bode Miller's post-race interview) and hooray for Bob Costas, who recovered quickly from his double pinkeye to give us his stellar Olympic coverage!

  20. Hi Julie - wonderful poem .. and I love the Olympics connection: humanity unites there, even in the throes of competition ...

    Now I shall see:

    A skier's gotta soar,
    A skater's gotta twizzle.
    A winterland's the stage,
    The ratings set to sizzle.

    United in the stands,
    As the torch blazes bold.
    The finest are brightly cast,
    In bronze, silver and gold.

In a new light .. loved it - cheers Hilary

  21. Kim - It was funny when Matt Lauer was covering for Bob Costas, and said that he had to hurry back cause he was running out of clothes. I didn't see the Bode Miller interview, but I'll try to look it up. Even some of the commercials have been very emotional. Thanks Kim!

Elise - Thank you so much!

Jo - This has been such a wonderful bloghop! Thanks Jo!

Julie - I really appreciate it! Thanks Julie!

Hilary - I thought I'd try something a little more serious this time. Thank you Hilary!

  37. While I don't have the talent to write a serious poem (I specialize more in bawdy limericks. Surprise!), I agree with the sentiment. We're all passengers on this crazy thing called Earth. And that is what makes us human. Not the wasteful hatred of some. While I'm not all that much in a hurry to reach the end, part of me is interested how this all plays out (it's a trip we all take).

    1. Ken - If there's one thing you don't lack, it's talent. The ability to make people laugh with your "bawdy limericks" is quite an accomplishment, and you also have a way at tugging at our heartstrings. Hopefully, you won't know how this all plays out for many, many years to come, but it is interesting to think about.
