Bringing Movies To A Urinal By You

As a frequent moviegoer, my closest friend couldn't wait to tell me about an app that signals the best time to take a bathroom break during a film. The RunPee app enables you to catch up on what you've missed in the comfort of your own public stall or urinal. I needed to learn more.

  1. Unbelievable, what will they think of next. If it works it's not a bad idea for those who have problems sitting through a whole movie. I even do that at home when we have a movie on a channel with no ads.

  2. I'm not interested in mobiles, so this to me, seems beyond stupid. Aside from someone like Jo mentioned, who might need it.

  3. That is pure genius!! Some movies are so damn long, like they feel obligated to make them two and a half hours long.

  4. "The app suggested taking a potty break during the award winning song, "Let It Go.""
I laughed out loud at the appropriateness of this.

  5. Jo - I like the idea of a home version for people who don't have DVR's. I don't know how we managed without them!

Ivy - It seems a little silly to me too. I think a better idea would be to have recaps after the movie.

Alex - You would be a good candidate for this, as you would be respectful to other movie goers. I could see this causing havoc, if it got into the wrong hands.

Carol - This reminds me of when my aunt and uncle saw a live show with horses. As the singer sang, "Let It Go," one of the horses obliged in a BIG way!

  6. lol well when you gotta let it go you gotta let it go. Will never think of that song the same again. That is an awesome idea for an app indeed

  7. Now this is funny. I never would have thought about this but I still don't think I would leave the theatre unless is was a true emergency:)

  8. Your post is great. I enjoyed it. However, I have concerns about the app. Does it differentiate between pee and poop and allow more time for one than the other? Can it sense constipation or a shy bladder?

    Love,
    Janie

  9. Ha! This is clever, but it made me laugh too. It seems like a good idea, but I'm not sure that the app's schedule would sync with my body's schedule. :)

  10. But, you never; one app may change a life forever. I have my current kitty because a little girl had a kitty app on her phone, and the little kitty many folks had been trying to catch for twelve hours came right up to her. He was a holy terror snatched, so I took him off her hands and drove three hours home with him howling and clawing. The vet said he was four weeks and and pretty close to crapping out when I got some water, then food, down him.
I'll figure out how that is analogous to RunPee later.

  11. Pat - I couldn't have said it better myself! It seems to be doing really well.

Birgit - I usually try to take care of business before the movie starts, but it's nice to have options!

Janie - I would love to have an app that addressed constipation. For example, it could tell me things like, "Sure, have some more popcorn. Nothing's gonna happen tonight anyway." I love the way you think, Janie!

Daisy - The app offers several suggestions, so if you miss one potty train, you can always hop on the next one.

Joanne - It's amazing how an app helped you find your kitty! What a great story, and it does relate to the app theme!

    1. Gosh, thanks. Constipation can be fascinating. I think Willy Dunne Wooters suffers from it, but he won't talk about it. How about an app that tells us stuff that our partners won't talk about but should?

    2. Janie - If it also works for twenty-something sons, I'm in! Keep 'em coming Janie --you're on a roll!

  12. After seeing Frozen, I'm convinced I could have just taken a pee break during the entire movie and not missed anything good (not a fan).

Also, I had to laugh at the 'vibrate' function. I mean, what if your phone vibrates, and you leave for a bathroom break, only to find out that it wasn't an appropriate pee break warning? - It was just your friend sending you a text message. And now you'll never know who Luke's father is because you missed it. It's that Yoda guy, right?

    ReplyDelete
  13. B & B - Though I loved when Idina Menzel belted out "Let It Go," I also wasn't a huge fan of Frozen. You're right about the vibrating function causing false alarms. Maybe it makes more sense to buy Kramer's bootleg copy! Yoda men, B & B!

  14. This might work well, because many movies have scenes which are less entertaining than having a pee. However the application ought to recommend a diaper solution for truly great films.

    1. Gorilla - What a wonderful suggestion! Personally, I think all of the seats should be converted into porta potties. Of course, there would have to be a strict no flushing policy during the movie.

  16. That's so funny. What will they think up next?

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh. My. Word.
    What next?
The App World is growing at an alarming rate... it's EXPLODING!
... "they" will eventually have to design an App to manage all the other Apps... aptly named: The App Manager.
If the App Manager doesn't deliver, then it will become the Inapt App Manager... LOL
(with your highly creative brain, you could probably write a hilarious post about the Inapt App Manager)

  18. >>... One glitch occurred during the Disney movie Frozen. The app suggested taking a potty break during the award winning song, "Let It Go."

Ha!-Ha! Well, heck, even the movie was telling the audience the same thing.

Sometimes I have a hard time believing this is the same world and life that I was born into. I mean, in high school something like the Internet was unimaginable. And Real-Time conversations with a person on the other side of the globe? Now we have an electronic device telling us when it would be a good time to visit the restroom in the middle of a movie. Unbelievable! And 1970 seems almost like yesterday to me.

  19. Technology has found an answer to everything. If only every long movie played the song, "Let It Go" in the middle of the film, there would not be a seat or standing room left in the bathrooms.

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's brilliant. I can never make it through a long movie without having to get up and go. :)

    ReplyDelete
  21. OSS - I really appreciate it! Thank YOU!

Natalie - It's incredible how so many new apps are popping up every day!

Michelle - The "Inapt App Manager" sounds like a fun idea for A to Z! I'll have to give it
some thought! Thanks for saying I have a "highly creative brain!" This is quite a
    compliment coming from you, Michelle!

Stephen - You're absolutely right! I remember when I went to college in my home state, it was considered long distance to call my mom. Who would've ever thought that we'd be able to call anywhere in the world for pennies, let alone be able to Skype?! Gosh I
    feel old!

Arleen - Years ago, they used to have intermissions during long movies. I think Sound
of Music was one of them. This was also a great way to lure people over to the candy counter.

Luanne - It's nice to see you! It's always safer to have an aisle seat, just in case.

  22. A question of "See While You Pee" I guess.

  23. I'm usually okay, except when Fay Wray jumps off the cliff and into the water.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yvonne - For some reason, the idea of multi-tasking in a public bathroom just doesn't appeal to me, but it sounds better when you say it!

JJ - It all began with Fay Wray. Yep, I could see where that scene would give you the urge to "Let It Go!"

  25. more and more I just hope people stay home and watch their movies and stop annoying me. Yes - I'm the grouchy woman who doesn't want you crawling over me. and yes I'm a "shusher" too. I also think if this app is buzzing people or lighting up - that could make me go berserk. Sorry - crabby Friday. I shall recover soon from my 3 hour in the snow drive home from work. Have a super weekend!!!

    1. Joanne - I would also be annoyed with all of the buzzing, and "light pollution." You were a great sport when your house was collapsing in the midst of formatting Old Broads, so you're entitled to a little crabbiness after driving three hours in a snowstorm. Sorry you had to go through all that! Stay safe, and try to have a good weekend, Joanne!

  26. We truly live in a crazy world, don't we! And of course you can't take a pee break during Let it go. That's the first pop song that my little 4 year old grandson has sung and performed for me.

    1. Rosalind - How exciting that you have another show stopper in the family! I'm sure he takes after his multi-talented grandma! I hope you keep a video recording with you at all times, Rosalind!

  27. That RunPee app is fantastic! It told me to stay in the can the entire time "The Grand Budapest Hotel" was on. Money well spent, I'd say.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The pee thing is among the reasons I don't go to the theater anymore. With my big TV screen and good sound I'd rather just stay home, save money, and pause the movie when nature calls. And I don't have a smart phone anyway, though the RunPee app is pretty clever.

I used to think they should have screens in the bathrooms where you could keep watching the film while you did what you have to do. Then there is the convenient solution of adult diapers which is a solution I've been considering for when I'm on a long trip.

  29. I have never been in theater that did not have a message that told all to turn off the cell phones. I wonder if they will now put in something that tells everyone the follow the directions of the RunPee app. Or maybe people will be able to come up with a way to share and then they can all go at the same time.

It would change the whole movie experience.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Al - Haha! I was also surprised that The Grand Budapest Hotel was up for Best Picture, though it still managed to win other awards. We all would've enjoyed the Oscars if Doogie hired you as head comedy writer!

Lee - I think the pause button has been responsible for saving many marriages! With so many movies playing in theaters at once, I think it would be too difficult to have screens set up in restrooms. It would also drive ticket prices way up. You should continue watching movies in the comfort of your own home, Lee. Hopefully, you won't have to worry about diapers until your 50th A to Z Challenge!

Yvonne - Instead of turning off your cell phone, the app works when you leave it on vibrate. I still think people would get upset if RunPee users disrupted everyone in their row by walking in and out once the movie has started.

  31. I had no idea this existed. Thank you for this public service announcement. Movie-going will never be the same. As for me, I know I have to take a pee break sometime during the movie, so I always sit close to the door and on the end of the aisle. That's preparedness.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Robin - These app users should follow your proper movie theater etiquette by also sitting on the end of the aisle. I have a feeling that most of them won't take this into consideration, and will abuse the privilege. Shame on them. Thanks Robin!

  32. I knew the world of Apps would find a way into our most intimate life moments. I can only imagine what's next. Do you think Apps have a sense of humor? I mean it sounds like it with that "Let it Go" coincidence.

  33. Ha - What in the world....?

  34. Lee - The article said it was a suggested break time, because of the duration of the song. This was before Let It Go became a big hit. I don't think anyone even thought about the double entendre. For some reason, the app creator didn't think his comparison to Google Maps was funny either.

    Lila - EXACTLY!

  35. ["Most importantly, there's a built-in timer that vibrates the phone when there's a Peetime."]

Great, I hear a bell and salivate. This will not turn out well.

  36. Hey Julie,

Plenty of leaked sources in your post. I'm waiting for the "crap app"! I wonder why it's called a "bathroom" when there isn't a bath?

    Gary :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. I've heard of this app before, (maybe from you?) but since I don't have a cell phone, let alone a "smart" one, I'll just have to take my chances...or hold it. :)

Best line in this post? The part about the guy "leaking" the meaning of his app... HA!

    You're a hoot, kiddo.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Dixie - They should probably add "salivating" as a list of harmful side effects! Very funny, Dixie! Thanks for following me!

Gary - Actually it's more of a restroom, but it's difficult to take a nap with the toilets flushing all the time. Movie theaters are much better places for napping, though the flashing lights and vibrations won't exactly lull you to sleep. A "crap app" has probably been created in the time it took me to type this! Good to see you, Gary!

Susan - I wrote about a few other apps before, but I only recently heard about RunPee.
I was toying with slipping in something with Depends, and then I settled on the "leaked" line instead. Great catch, Susan, and that's what Smarticus' family said when he landed you

Well - it will amuse many and be a fun app to show others .. I can certainly see there'll be a run on the peeapp! Cheers Hilary
