IWSG: Getting Two Legs Up On The Competition

Welcome to the July edition of Alex J. Cavanaugh's, Insecure Writer's Support Group. Be sure to visit the other talented writers who offer words of encouragement, and endless support here.

As we're getting ready to celebrate the 4th of July, we can't help thinking of ways to create fireworks in our writing. We want our next book or project to go off like sky rockets, so that everyone will want to grab a copy to experience that feeling again and again.

The hard part is coming up with something completely original. As writers we seem to have more similarities than differences. We stare blankly at our keyboards, we're constantly trying to prove ourselves, and we come to life at strange hours. Sometimes all it takes is one scene to set us apart. It could be something so obvious that we slap ourselves for not seeing it sooner; a simple concept with a creative spin that sets the Internet on fire. This man jumped in with both feet.

In case you have trouble accessing the video below, here is the direct link: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/man-dances-pants-body-article-1.1849382

Remember that this man is a professional, so do not try this trick at home. It could leave you with a leg up in the emergency room, which wouldn't be fair to all of the kids in line who shot off fingers and toes with firecrackers. Happy 4th of July!

  1. Wow, that video is pretty impressive, and would most certainly leave me in big trouble if I tried it at home. Great post, love the comparison to fireworks. Have a fun weekend. (it's winter here, and we don't celebrate the 4th of the July in the Commonwealth).

  2. Hmmmm...now there's a skill not too many of us require.

  3. Rhonda - I hope that you're having a mild winter. I also was impressed with this video. Thanks Rhonda!

Delores - You just never know if you'll be in a situation where you have to get dressed quickly while you're still in handcuffs. It's good to be prepared.

  4. What a nasty video! His pants were like a pair of pythons swallowing their prey. Yukity yuk! It's funny you mention slapping ourselves, because yesterday I watched an episode of Cheers in which Sam and Diane repeatedly slap each other. As you're a Shelly Long lookalike, I would allow you to slap my face to inspire my writing.

  5. Wow! Can't say I'd try following in those footsteps. I'm all for finding a unique story idea, and some are better than others.

  6. Farr too dangerous, and we have enough trouble on Guy Fawkes night! :0)

  7. Hey, if someone can create a new way to put on trousers, he is a true original. I couldn't do that even if I wanted to.

Have a great holiday, Julie. :)

  8. ROFL he was certainly flexible. I wish I had that much agility. Most impressive. I enjoy motion and movement like dance, and that was sort of a dance, LOL.

  9. Gorilla - They are like "python pants," and he's one heck of a snake charmer! I do love the Cheers episodes with Sam and Diane!

Arleen - Maybe just a little one!

Miranda - He's certainly "unique," and you're wise not to attempt this stunt!

Luanne - The only way I'd even try this would be if I borrowed my mom's Life Alert pendant! Have a great 4th too, Luanne!

Juneta - Now that you mention it, this could become the latest dance craze! It looks like a great workout too!

  10. OMG! I can see the results of me trying to do this. Not pretty.
    Happy 4th!

  11. I watched the video. Now I'm disturbed.
Finding that one thing to set us apart is key, isn't it?

  12. I saw that a couple days ago. Absolutely amazing! But imagine if he applied himself to something really important. As for finding that one thing, I tend to trust my gut and own taste. It's steered me well so far.

  13. LOL I was going to say the same thing as Carol - it wouldn't be pretty if I tried this. The video made me laugh so much. Of all the crazy things!

Happy 4th to you and your family, Julie. :)

  14. I think I'd break a hip trying to do this. I'll stick with using my hands.

  15. It looks as if the video was too dangerous to show. It's been removed.

  16. Carol - I feel exactly the same way! Happy 4th to you, Carol!

Alex - It should only disturb you if you were wearing the pants at the time! Thanks for hosting the IWSG, Alex!

Nancy - Maybe he's a rocket scientist, and dancing into his pants is just a hobby. Yes, your gut has steered you very well, Nancy!

Julie - It also made me laugh, and I'm sorry that it was removed. Happy 4th to you as well, Julie!

Stephen - A very wise decision!

Lee - It figures that the one video I've posted all year has been removed! Oh well, I added a link in case you still haven't seen it. Sorry about that, Lee.

Shelly - Hope you have a wonderful holiday too! Thanks Shelly!

    2. Lee - Thanks for giving it another try! Luckily, my son was able to restore the video. I also got a kick out of it!

  19. Liza - I'm sorry that you couldn't see the video. I even had to change the link, as it also mysteriously disappeared. Hope you get a chance to see some fireworks over the holiday!

Daisy - Well, mine clearly doesn't involve something as simple as sharing a video. Thanks Daisy, and the same to you!

  20. Hey Julie,

I followed through to the link and it worked for me. Dude dances his pants on. I fly by the seat of my pants.

Originality is getting a dog, or heaven forbid, a cat do the writing for you. You forgot Canada Day, eh! :) Happy Fourth of July to y'all. Nice to note you "have a nice day!" folks celebrate my birthday a day early.

    Gary :)

  21. So true that the unique idea has the leg up. I now spend more time than ever working through my idea before even starting to write. It saves lots of time in the long run in edits! And the bonus is I can ruminate while doing a slew of other things. Yay, multi-tasking!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Gary - You are one of the most creative people I know, and Penny is the smartest dog ever! Could I rent her out for some tech advice? Happy belated Canada Day, and early happy birthday wishes!

Kim - It's great that you're an advanced multi-tasker. That's something that I really need to work on. Happy ruminating!

  23. I've watched a lot of dancing and never seen anything like that before. He gets it for creativity and originality. Thanks for sharing!

  24. too keep the world in balance, I shall sit my butt on a patio chair for July 4th. He can go crazy in his dance. I'll watch! Have a great weekend

  25. I'm so trying that tomorrow in front of my Urchins. I better call the hospital now to make reservations! Great post, Julie!

  26. Robin - I agree that he gets an A+ for originality! Hope you have a fun 4th, Robin!

Joanne - You deserve to take a long break this weekend! I know how hard you work Joanne, and your family doesn't need any more injuries! Have a great holiday!

Ava - Try to get a room with a view of the fireworks! Happy 4th of July! Thanks Ava!

  28. I'm seem to be in a minority, it does nothing for me! If the kids started doing that I'd be like "Stop messing around and get dressed!"LOL!

  29. That video shows how useful Lycra can be. I bet he can't take them off the same way.

I hope you are enjoying July 4. It is a beautiful day.

  30. Natalie - I'm with you! Hope you had a great 4th!

Suzanne - I think that it was well worth the forty seconds. Didn't Gypsy Rose Lee spend more time taking her clothes off?!

Yvonne - Great point! I was also thinking about the difficulties he'd face at a urinal! Glad you had a happy 4th, Yvonne!

  33. Haha, like Alex, I'm slightly disturbed. I guess I'm kind of envious too, considering all the multi-tasking I could do if I didn't need my hands to get dressed in the morning.

Your words are meaningful, Julie, and a great intro to that video.

    ReplyDelete
  34. B & B - I'm sure that you'd do it with the same snakelike precision!

Robyn - Yes, his dressing technique would definitely free you up to accomplish many tasks! Sorry that you also found it a bit disturbing. Thanks Robyn!

  35. Oh Julie!!! I most certainly will not try that now - and even a few decades younger you'd have had to visit me in A& E (your ER I think!) ... crazy video .. but fun ...

Being creative is an interesting phenomenon ... but I wouldn't do that!!!

    Cheers Hilary
