Lexa & Julie's Dream Destination Blog-Hop

Julie Flanders  and  Lexa Cain  are hosting the Dream Destination Blog-Hop to celebrate their book releases.  Julie's  The Ghosts of Aquinnah, and Lexa's Soul Cutter are both debuting this week, so they're celebrating with lots of fantastic prizes. Be sure to visit  http://julieflanders.blogspot.com/  and http://lexacain.blogspot.com/  to enter the Rafflecopter Giveaway, and learn more about their fascinating novels.

Speaking of dream destinations, I've always wanted to visit Paris, or explore all that Greece has to offer, but there are some unusual sights worth seeing right here in the U.S.
Wikipedia

According to Wikipedia, "Bubblegum Alley is a local tourist landmark in downtown San Luis Obispo, California, known for its accumulation of used bubble gum on the walls of an alley...lined with chewed gum left by passers-by." It's not clear whether the alley was created after WWII at the San Luis Obispo High School graduation, or if it began in the "late 1950s, as rivalry between San Luis Obispo High School, and Polytechnic State University students. The strength of the alley has been tested by objecting store owners, ecologically minded locals, scrapers, and even fire hoses." When firefighters sprayed the walls in 1985, the walls were refilled within a month.

I would only accompany my family to this germ infested alley, because they don't chew gum. Of course we would still be outfitted in Hazmat suits, and gloves to be on the safe side. Fortunately, it's not far from San Francisco which would be a wonderful place for the whole family.

If we wanted to stay even closer to home, we could take a road trip to Olney, Illinois, home of the white squirrel (photo courtesy of Wikipedia).

As cited in Wikipedia, "White squirrels have the right-of-way on all public streets, sidewalks, and thoroughfares in Olney, and there is a $750 fine for running one over." The police even wear a white squirrel on their badges. Since my husband and older son love wildlife this would be a great attraction for them, and it's only about a four hour drive from Chicago.

Sometimes you can visit the best Dream Destinations while you're curled up with a good book or two. Thanks to Julie Flanders' The Ghosts of Aquinnah, and Lexa Cain's Soul Cutter, you can take off on thrilling adventures without ever leaving home.

  1. Yes, I agree, there are wonderful things to discover close to home, Julie. I'm travelled much of my life, but at my age and with an invalid husband we are now discovering our wonderful country.

Would suck to have one of those squirrels run out in front of your car.

Congratulations on your new book, Julie. I will definitely read it after the holidays.

  7. OMG chewed gum and albino squirrels. I don't think you have to worry about anyone else choosing your destinations. :-) We've got some black squirrels in our neighborhood and I LOVE THEM. Another good place to find used gum is under the desks in any middle school. Oh, also Cedar Point has a ton of chewed gum plastered along the waiting lines to the rides. Best viewing time is at the end of the season.

    1. Kim - Thanks for the fun and frugal suggestion of taking a mini vacation under a school desk! There are probably other lovely treasures that were plastered on there for years! I would never dream of going on the rides at Cedar Point. Are you trying to make a person sick? You're a riot Kim!

    1. TBM - I also would be too worried about accidentally brushing up against the wall with any part of my body. The squirrels are cute, and the town sounds like it would be straight out of a movie or a TV show.

  9. They could cover the gum with some varnish and then it would be a a work of art. Anyone would then be able to touch it without fear of disease. It is also possible that the longer it is out there the more likely it is to be just like the rest of the air in town.

What a great thought. It would make a great children's story.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yvonne - You are always so nice and supportive. I like the varnish idea, but people would still find a way to abuse it. I just tried to find some wacky places that I thought people wouldn't know about, but I would never turn down Paris or anywhere in Greece.

  11. Hi, Julie,
First time I'm hearing about bubblegum alley. I'm neurotic, so that probably wouldn't be a good place for me to visit. That white squirrel is cute. I agree that we can take wonderful trips just sitting in front of our computers.

    1. Julie - Oh come on, there's lots of DNA in that alley. In your next novel, a sexy librarian turned detective could solve cold cases directly out of the alley! 13. I believe you can rest assured that NO ONE will echo your destination choices! There used to be a wall at Six Flags Over Georgia that was plastered in thousands of chewed gum wads. It may still be there, for all I know. We haven't been there in quite a few years, but I must admit, when we DID go, that wall wasn't a primary attraction.

We have a couple albino squirrels in our neighborhood, and it's always a thrill to see them. Or I should say "it". One of them ended up as road kill earlier this year.

Anyhow, neat choices! And you're right about curling up with a good book. We can travel the world over without getting dressed or putting on shoes.

    1. Susan - I'm still laughing from your wonderful destination poem! Yes, no one will echo my choices which was all part of my diabolical plan. Now it doesn't sound so bad staying home during the frigid winter. We have great books lined up to read, and it's a win-win situation. It's a shame that you had to lose one of your white squirrels though.

  15. There's a wall on my way to work that has intricate designs worked on it in chewing gum. There's also a sidewalk outside a rest home near here that is littered with gum in a certain patch. I've always thought both places were a little odd and creepy....

I have never heard of Bubblegum Alley but it sounds way creepier than any of the destinations on my Halloweenie themed tour. ;D That white squirrel is adorable and the lengths the locals go to protect it is making me envision ancient Egypt and their reverence for cats.
